Moseying up the Mosel

Today was a great day. We headed up the Mosel river from Trier, after a nice morning before checkout seeing the sights.

In Trier, we first went to the cathedral to see where the most important Catholic church outside of Rome is. Very impressive and not what I expected to see in Trier. Trier was once the capital of the western portion of the Holy Roman Empire and as such earned a lot of claim to fame in the middle ages. First picture below is from the outside of the cathedral and the second is from the inside. The smaller church to the right wasn't open, so we missed that and the basilica which is now Lutheran didn't open until 10, so next trip there are still things to see.

After that, we grabbed food at a market stand for our 2 picnics that day. After breakfast, we headed to Porta Nigra, which is the old Roman wall ruins (now church). Third picture shows that - pretty neat!

We then took the long way up the Mosel, stopping to take pictures, each lunch and shop in Cochem. We stayed in Moselkern - today is Burg Eltz and the Rhine Valley. Oh and the pork schnitzel and white Riesling was a perfect cap to the day. Now just need to find wifi to upload posts!
